FOMO

The FOMO Trap: Why We’re All Afraid of Missing Out (and How to Fix It)

We’ve all been there. You’re lounging on your couch, scrolling through Instagram, when you see it: a group of friends at a concert you weren't invited to, or a colleague posting about a promotion while you're still in your pajamas. Suddenly, that cozy night in feels like a failure.
That sinking feeling in your stomach? That’s FOMO—the Fear of Missing Out.

What exactly is FOMO?

At its core, FOMO is the anxiety that others are having rewarding experiences from which you are absent. While the feeling has existed as long as humans have lived in social groups, the digital age has turned it into a 24/7 spectator sport.
Social media acts as a "highlight reel." We compare our messy, behind-the-scenes reality to everyone else’s polished, filtered best moments. It’s an unfair fight, and it’s one that often leads to stress, poor sleep, and a lack of focus.

The Cost of Always Being "On"

The irony of FOMO is that in our rush to make sure we don't miss anything, we often miss the very moment we’re in. When you’re at a dinner but spent half the time checking your phone to see what else is happening, you aren't actually present for the dinner you're at.

How to Flip the Script: From FOMO to JOMO

The antidote to the Fear of Missing Out is JOMO—the Joy of Missing Out. It’s the intentional choice to be present and content with where you are, even if there’s something "cooler" happening elsewhere.
Here’s how to start:
  1. Filter Your Feed: If certain accounts consistently make you feel "less than," hit unfollow or mute. Your mental health is more important than a follower count.
  2. Practice Digital Fasting: Set "no-phone zones," like during meals or the hour before bed.
  3. Celebrate the "No": Every time you say no to an event you don't actually want to go to, you're saying yes to your own time, rest, and peace of mind.
FOMO is just a trick of the mind telling you that the "real" life is happening somewhere else. But the truth? The best life is the one you’re actually living!

(Two post in one day, I might just be on a role 😝!)
